To create the XML export (RSS feed)

Ensure content is available for syndication, the most common is news. However you could select other content types such as HTML. If you have a large number of items available, you may want to restrict what is exported. To do this, make sure the content items are categorised (see ***** for more imformation on categories), you can use this categorisation later on.

1. Begin XML Export

Go to Content > Content Utilities > RSS Feeds

2. XML Export Detailed Properties

After clicking on add, the following form will display:

Field Definition Action
Title Used for administration only Not required
Description   Not required
Language Default: (default <en-us>) Used for RSS meta data Not required
Creator Used for RSS meta data (this is an email address) Not required
Rights Used for RSS meta data (copyright notes Not required
Generator Agent Used for RSS meta data Not required
Error Reports Email recipient will be notified of any XML file generation errors Required
Update Period: Used for RSS meta data Not required
Update Base Date Used for RSS meta data
Content Type Important If news is to be syndicated then select <dmNews> Required filed
Max Number of Items: restricts the maximum number of items included in the XML file Required field
Export File: the name of the XML file Required field

If news items are categorised, click either Next or Categories otherwise click save to complete XML Export creation.

2.1 Categorising the XML export

After clicking on categories, the following form will display:

The category tree will be available, choose the appropriate category and choose save.

3. Preview XML feed

To test the XML output, click view

You should see the following XML output, notice the "link" field, http://www.farcrycms.org/xml/export.xml, this is the link you provide users. For example, the link could be included in a HTML page with some explanatory text outlining how to add an RSS feed to Firefox or other commonly available RSS readers.

4. Final Adjustments

To change where the path XML is exported, go to Admin > Config Files > General > EXPORTPATH (e.g. www/<your_directory_name>)

This example would result in the following http://www.farcrycms.org/RSS/export.xml
